The pilgrimage church “Maria Himmelfahrt” (Assumption of Our Lady) is among the most significant in Southern Germany.
Due to a stroke of luck, the small wooden field chapel was spared during a fire that happened in 1619. Electoral princess Elisabeth, wife to Maximilian I of Bavaria, had her husband build the Early Baroque pilgrimage church over the chapel. It is impressive due to the work done on the alter by Jakob Bendel who had also created the heartfelt painting “Mother Mary with Her Child” that is currently hanging in the Chapel of Mercy today. The chapel is furnished with approx. 1,300 wooden votive tablets originating over the course of four centuries.
