The only completely conserved fortified church in the South of Germany is located in Kößlarn in the south of the Passau Land region – currently known as Parish church of the Holy Trinity (“Pfarrkirche Hl. Dreifaltigkeit”). The castle church was built in the 15th century and, in the Middle Ages, it was among the most significant Marian pilgrimages in Eastern Bavaria.
The focus of attention in the church’s interior is the magnificent high altar. The church is home to the famous silver Madonna by the Passau goldsmith Balthasar Waltensperger. In addition, it is furnished with a Late Gothic donkey figure symbolising the entry of Christ into Jerusalem, which is carried during the large procession on Palm Sunday.
