In 2011, the railway line between Passau and Freyung that had once been suspended was put back into operation. Since then, every year from May to October, the ITB reliably brings countless travellers coming from near and far from Passau through the wildly romantic Ilztal & Dreiburgenland regions into “the forest” and back again every Saturday and Sunday.
From the end train station Freyung, there are connections to the Bavarian Forest National Park and the Sumava National Park. From Waldkirchen, with the “Danube-Moldavia ticket” that is valid even after crossing the border, passengers can comfortably travel first by bus and from the border with the South Bohemian Train further on to the Czech Republic, e.g. to Krumlov.
Tip: Begin your cycling excursion with a railway trip from Passau to one of the stops in Ilztal and follow the Danube-Bavarian Forest route back to Passau! Or take an enjoyable hike through the romantic riverscape of the Ilztal and rest your tired feet on the way back!
