The Passau Land region is not only a retreat for the animals of the European Nature Reserve, but also for bears. Since 2008, the Union for Animals (“Gewerkschaft für Tiere e. V.”) in Bad Füssing has been operating an animal sanctuary. The sanctuary was set up on the premises of a former ammunition depot that was able to be reused; for example, the ammunition bunkers made into bear caves. In this way, one of the most beautiful and safest bear enclosures in Europe emerged as a result. Over a total of five spacious, realistically designed enclosures, bears that had once been subject to maltreatment and suffering can live to a ripe old age and revert back to the behaviour typical of a bear.
Visitors can observe the bears on the circular trail around the premises over a length of 1.5 km. There are also interesting and educational billboards here for both children and adults. Furthermore, in the south of the facility, there is a visitor platform from which the bears in the main enclosure can be observed at a safe distance. Due to the past of the bears, which is in part quite traumatising, there are no general opening hours set for the sanctuary. For teaching institutes and other interested visitors, there is however the possibility to receive a group tour from approximately April until October upon registering in advance (this depends on the hibernation period of the animals).
