City of Passau

The City of Three Rivers, Passau is one of the most fascinating cities on the Danube.

Here, the three rivers, the Danube, Inn and Ilz flow together at the river triangle – the play of colours is especially fascinating with the black Ilz, the blue Danube and the green Inn that finally mix here a few hundred metres onward.

In the Baroque city, there is a pairing of charm and beauty, history and culture, art and adventure. By means of the interaction between the tourist sites with the entire historic city centre and its winding streets, a distinctive atmosphere developed that makes up the extraordinary beauty of Passau.
The history of the city was and is full of life. People had already settled here in the Neolithic Age; later the Romans built several forts in the area around the Danube and the Inn. One of the forts also gave Passau its name: Batavis, Pazzawe, Passau. From the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century, the prince-bishops have controlled the history of the city. In this time, Passau grew to the diocese of the Holy Empire with the largest area that stretched into present-day Hungary. Passau became similarly powerful as a centre for trade, education and culture.

It is in this way that Passau has been a hub of business and recreational travel ever since. Many hundreds of thousands of guests come yearly to experience the flair of the city. Where emperors and kings had once left their impressive marks, the inns were full of renowned names such as Napoleon, Empress “Sissi” and Mozart. And even today, Passau is famous for its hospitality. And in the idyllic beer gardens, rustic restaurants and numerous street cafés, visitors feel that they are welcome here. The hotels and restaurants that are rich in tradition with their magnificent atmospheres do everything possible to make their guests feel comfortable.
