The Goldsteig

Over 1,000 years ago, the salt traders had once followed this path, bringing wealth to the region. On the Goldsteig trail of the present day, hikers can follow traces in history through the Upper Palatinate Forest and the Bavarian Forest.

The Goldsteig has its origin in Markredwitz and runs from there to Passau. In Thanstein, the way splits into a northern and southern route.
The northern route leads over the towns of Waldmünchen, Furth i. W., Bayerisch-Eisenstein, Rachel, Lusen and Philippsreut into the Passau Land region, where it leads further on through Breitenberg, Sonnen and Hauzenberg to Passau.
The southern route takes hikers into the region through Mappach, Sankt Englmar, Lalling and Schrottenbraumühle through the Ilztal & Dreiburgenland into the region. Further on, it leads across Hutthurm and Ruderting into the City of Three Rivers, Passau, where it joins the northern route.
In addition to the Goldsteig, there are numerous enjoyable tracks to enjoy – access routes, circuit routes and alternative routes – that meet the Goldsteig’s high standards and are marked in white and blue with the Goldsteig logo.

In 2013, already now for the third time, the Goldsteig has just been distinguished as a quality hiking path.
