Since the summer of 2010, a top hiking adventure has been in place with the Donausteig trail located at the Bavarian-Austrian Danube. At around 450 kilometres in length and running along both banks of the Danube for the most part, it starts at Passau and leads across the region of the “Danube Pearls region” and Linz until Grein. On the mountain ridges over the Danube river, you hike through picturesque scenery with fantastic panoramas.
Upon setting up the route, special attention had been paid to using the least amount of asphalt-paved pathways as possible – this had been done to the benefit of hikers. Experiencing the wonder of nature here is clearly paramount. Precious areas of unspoilt nature and distinguished animal types and various sorts of plant life make the area quite appealing. If you are lucky, you might even spot a green lizard at the Donauleiten nature reserve!
Staying true to the motto of the Donausteig, “simply legendary”, the orientation signs at the 165 starting points and rest areas take you to another world by telling 120 traditional legends from the Danube region.
However, the mundane needs are also by no means neglected: the “Donausteig innkeepers” are perfectly focused on the needs of hikers.
Depending on what you desire, your mood, or level of physical fitness, you can utilise the Donausteig as a long-distance path one leg at a time up to 24 times, a challenging day hike, or as a comfortable walk by making a trip around one of the 41 Donausteig circular pathways.
Detailed information on the Donausteig can be found at www.donausteig.com.
Informational material on the Donausteig can be requested at the Passau Land region’s tourist information centre at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Our tip: Combine hiking on the Donausteig with a ship excursion on the Danube!
